Two unusual goals ensured Barrow and Salford played out a 1-1 draw Where does leave Salford's chanced of qualifying for the play-offs? Author - Michael Haldsworth Tyler Smith scrambled the Bluebirds into a 37th-minute lead from Ben Whitfield's cross with his fourth goal of the season. Salford claimed the striker's effort had not crossed the line or that the ball had been knocked out of keeper Matty Young's grasp. Barrow provided a greater attacking threat in the second half, with Dean Campbell and Whitfield flashing shots over the crossbar. The former Barrow loanee Cole Stockton was denied his 14th goal of the campaign after 60 minutes by Wyll Stanway's third crucial save of the night. Smith should then have doubled Barrow's lead only to be denied by Young. A stunning view and sunset at the ground This did prove to be something of a turning point as Salford grabbed a deserved leveller after 69 minutes. Attempting to punch clear from under his crossbar, St...

Rugby League: Restrictions for Salford lifted

Image
Salford fans can now start looking forward to the rest of the Super League season The Red Devils have been given the green light to field a full-strength side against Leeds Rhinos on Saturday after the sustainability cap imposed by the Rugby Football League was lifted. Author - Michael Haldsworth Confirmation that a takeover of the club being formally approved by RFL Commercial will come as a huge relief to everyone associated with the club. In addition to their long-term future now being guaranteed, it means there will be no repeat of head coach Paul Rowley's farcical team selection against St Helens that saw them thrashed 82-0 in their first Super League fixture.  This 15 try victory was the heaviest winning margin in the league's history. From a Salford perspective, it represented a low moment in what has been a fairly successful era for the club.  Click here for more Super League news from Manchester Super News Party atmosphere expected for Salford’s first home game This...

After the break, Wimbledon had strong appeals for a penalty turned down when Omar Bugiel appeared to be pulled down while trying to connect with a Jake Reeves cross. Manchester City 8 - 0 Salford City

Image
An easy day for Manchester City as they thrashed League Two Salford City Manchester City breezed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with an emphatic 8-0 victory over League Two side Salford City at the Etihad Stadium, powered by a James McAtee hat-trick. Author - Macca Jeremy Doku chipped in with a brace, Jack Grealish ended his lengthy goal drought, and young talents Divin Mubama and Nico O'Reilly also found the net in a completely one-sided affair. City’s ruthlessness was on full display as a much-rotated team delighted their fans with a dominant performance against Salford, a club owned by the famous ‘Class of 92’.  Gary Neville, one of the co-owners and a former Manchester United star , became a target for relentless taunts despite not being in attendance. Meanwhile, his former teammates Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes had to endure all of this from the stands. Another step in our journey but a step too far in our third round debut. #MCISAL pic.twitter.com/PvQ7sJZ9e4 — Salf...

In the baking sunshine, Salford Red Devils registered a Betfred Super League Rivals Round victory against Leigh Leopards. Easter is always a highlight of the rugby league calendar. Today’s encounter would normally be the first of two Super League fixtures this weekend, but a change of schedule means we’ve now got five days to reset and prepare for the visit of Castleford Tigers next Thursday. It was clear quite early on that Salford was intent on playing quick and our first set gained massive metres via the ruck speed of Andy Ackers. After both sides traded sets, a dropped ball on halfway allowed Leigh an opportunity to build their first meaningful attack. Lachlan Lam received the ball around 30 metres out...

GMP: Cocaine dealer rumbled by Salford's anti-gang cops

Image
A cocaine dealer from Weaste has been jailed after GMP's anti-gang cops in Salford caught him in a car with ketamine, before they went on to uncover the raft of class A, B, and C drugs he intended to sell. What happened then? Luke Oliver (28) became the latest to be rumbled by officers from our Operation Naseby disruption taskforce that has helped drive down shootings in the city by over 70% since its inception two years ago after 300 arrests, over 300 car seizures, nearly 130 house searches, and around 50kilos of drugs recovered. Manchester Crown Court heard how Oliver was spotted by patrols in Weaste in April in a vehicle linked to a cannabis dealer who the Op Naseby team had recently helped to jail. Officers stopped the black Volkswagen Golf and spotted cash and observed that Oliver – the sole occupant of the car – appeared nervous and looked as though he had taken drugs. During a subsequent search of the vehicle – under section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act – they found fiv...
