Running: A guide to the Manchester Marathon
Will you be taking part in this year's event?
More than 35,000 runners are expected to descend on Manchester this weekend as the city prepares for its annual marathon.
Participants from across the globe are set to take on the 26.2-mile route on Sunday, with this year’s race finishing outside the University of Manchester on Oxford Road, a new location for 2025.
Organisers are advising both runners and spectators to plan ahead, as major roads in and around Trafford will be closed for much of the day. Public transport is also likely to be disrupted, with bus routes diverted and Metrolink services expected to be particularly busy.
What’s the route?
The course weaves through South Manchester, beginning outside Old Trafford football stadium before following Chester Road towards Sale and on to Altrincham.
From there, runners loop back through Baguley and pass through Sale once more, before heading towards Chorlton, Whalley Range and Hulme. The finish line is located this year on Oxford Road, outside the university.

Many returning participants say the course offers a unique mix of urban and suburban scenery.
"It's one of my favourite races. The crowds in Sale and Chorlton are just incredible and keep you going when your legs are starting to go," said Adam Lomas, 38, who has completed the marathon three times.
Jess Allen, 29, who ran her first Manchester Marathon last year, said the flat course was ideal for beginners. "There were so many people cheering the whole way round. It felt like the whole city came out to support us."
When does it begin?
The elite runners, expected to lead the pack and challenge for a podium finish, will set off at 09:00 BST. After that, waves of runners will depart in ten-minute intervals, with the final group beginning their race at 11:30.
