The 29-year-old prop, who has represented Queensland in State of Origin, joins on a three-and-a-half-year contract following his release from Parramatta Eels. Ofahengaue featured in the first six rounds of the NRL season before being granted an early departure.

Born in New Zealand, he brings a decade of experience in Australia’s top flight, having previously turned out for Brisbane Broncos and Wests Tigers.

A positive start to the season for Leigh. Can this signing further improve things?

He arrives at a Leigh side that has firmly established itself in the Super League since promotion, reaching the play-offs in both of their top-flight seasons so far. The Leopards currently sit fifth on the ladder, with four wins from their opening seven matches. You can watch one of their recent matches in the video below.

It has been common knowledge that they have been scouting the NRL market for new signings over the last couple of months. This is another example of this.

It will certainly be interesting to see if they bring in additional reinforcements over the next few months as they look to challenge for the Super League title.

Leopards’ Head of Rugby Chris Chester told the club's website: "Joe is a huge signing for the club for the rest of the current season and three years beyond.

“He’s an unbelievable player with a wealth of experience who has played for his country, in State of Origin and as a first grade regular for over ten years. Joe will add size and power to our middle unit.

“Despite all that to his name he’s still at a relatively young age and we feel his best rugby years are still ahead of him. I’m delighted to get his signature over the line."

The response from Leigh has been overwhelmingly positive. One told us: "It is important to build when the team is doing well and that is exactly what we have done. I can't wait to see how we improves the team."

Ste W added: "A fantastic start for the club this season. I can't wait to see how this signing develops."
