A battling point for Wigan Athletic against promotion chasing Wrexham

Many fans would have certainly taken that before the match.

League One | Wigan v Wrexham

The Latics shaded what was a largely uneventful opening half, with Maleace Asamoah curling wide for the hosts at the Brick Community Stadium.

Midfielder George Dobson fired wide at the other end as both sides went into the break having failed to register a shot on target.

Wrexham then appealed in vain for a penalty after Ryan Longman's cross hit Luke Robinson shortly after the interval as Wrexham improved.

Arthur Okonkwo produced a fine save to deny Asamoah shortly after the hour mark before keeping out an Owen Dale effort.

Parkinson who was fresh from being named League One Manager of the Month for March then sent on Steven Fletcher, Elliot Lee, Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott as Wrexham, who are second in the table, pushed for a winner.

However, Wigan’s defence held firm and picked up what is a decent point.

This result also ensured Birmingham City clinched the third tier title ahead of their Football League Trophy final contest against Peterborough United at Wembley on Sunday. Visit European Super Football for more reaction to that.

Ryan Lowe's Wigan are now winless in six league games and sit 17th in the table ahead of the remaining Saturday fixtures. However, this defensive performance would have pleased him and their fans.

With no realistic threat of relegation, Lowe and those running Wigan will  start exploring how they can improve next season. Fans will be hoping that they can finish in the top-half and push for a place in next season's play offs.

The Wigan fans that we spoke to after the match seemed to be positive about the performance even if they admit that they maybe could have done more to win the match

Paul Thompson messaged the following to us on Facebook: "To be honest, I thought we showed a lot more grit than in recent weeks. Wrexham came here flying high and you could tell they were pushing hard for a winner, but credit to our lads, they dug in and kept their heads. That save from Okonkwo was top class. We're still not winning, which is frustrating, but I’ll take a point against a side like that. Now let’s just try to end the season with a few more positives and get back on the right track."

Olivia D added: "That was more like it defensively. We’ve looked shaky in recent games, but today we actually looked organised and disciplined. Still lacking a bit of spark going forward, but you can’t argue with the fight and energy the team showed. "

Mackenzie, a season ticket holder, added: "I wasn’t expecting much to be honest, especially with Wrexham being second, but I came away feeling a bit more optimistic. It wasn’t pretty, very scrappy, but we stood up to them well. I’d still like to see us create more going forward. Asamoah showed flashes but we need more support around him. Hopefully the winless run ends soon, but at least there’s a bit of fight again. If we can finish strong, maybe even nick a few surprise results, then that’ll give us some belief going into next season."
