Football: Wigan Athletic 1 - 2 Reading

Another frustrating afternoon for Wigan Athletic

The Latics suffered late heartbreak as Reading struck twice in the final 20 minutes to turn the game around and snatch a 2-1 victory at the DW Stadium.

The first half was largely dominated by the visitors, with Latics goalkeeper Sam Tickle producing a string of fine saves to keep them at bay. He pushed away a powerful Lewis Wing free-kick from 25 yards before pulling off a stunning reflex stop to deny Andre Garcia from point-blank range.

Wigan had a stroke of luck when Harvey Knibbs’ deflected effort looped over Tickle but landed on the roof of the net rather than in it. Tickle then had to be alert again, blocking Tyler Bindon’s effort to keep the scores level at the break.

Latics grew into the game and broke the deadlock on the hour mark when Jonny Smith’s deep corner was met at the far post by Jason Kerr, who powered home a header.

But the lead lasted just 11 minutes as Charlie Savage whipped in a cross for Jayden Wareham to slot past Tickle and pull Reading level.

Wigan looked to hold on for at least a point, but their resistance was broken with five minutes left. Tickle made another superb stop to deny Knibbs before Amadou Mbengue’s header struck the bar. The hosts failed to clear the danger, and Bindon reacted quickest to turn the ball home from close range, leaving Latics empty-handed at the final whistle.

It's now all change for Wigan

This defeat extended an awful run of just one win from seven games. This has left them 15th in League One and are only six points above the relegation places.

He has been in charge for just over two years which has been an extremely difficult spell for the club that has included relegation from the Championship
