Kick-off was slightly delayed as fans took longer than usual to make their way into the stands, but once the action got underway, the hosts wasted little time in asserting themselves.

Burton keeper Max Crocombe did well to parry Will Collar’s effort, but Kyle Wootton reacted quickest to nod home the rebound in the eighth minute.

Tanto Olaofe almost doubled the lead moments later, only to be denied by Crocombe, while at the other end, Stockport’s Corey Addai produced a sharp low stop to keep out Owen Dodgson.

The visitors came agonisingly close to levelling just before the break, but Ethan Pye’s last-ditch block thwarted Charlie Webster from what looked like a certain goal.

Burton continued to push after the interval, with Anthony Forde forcing Addai into a smart save from a free-kick. But Stockport provided the game’s decisive moment 13 minutes from time, as Jack Diamond broke free and unselfishly squared for Olaofe to slot home.

Albion gave County a late scare when Julian Larsson pulled one back in stoppage time, flicking in from Jack Stretton’s pass. Moments later, Pye was dismissed for a second bookable offence after a desperate lunge on Kyran Lofthouse.

Despite the late drama, Stockport saw out the win, tightening their grip on a top-six finish.

Patrick, one Stockport fan, wasn't particularly with the performance despite the win. He said: Such a disappointing performance from the Hatters.  This is the worst that I’ve seen from us since Stevenage away. It should have been over after 15 min, but once again we sat back rather than finishing them off before half-time.

"Burton outplayed us for the first 20 of the 2nd half and they were unlucky not to get a point. Where we are in the table is brilliant, but we need to change something if we’re to stand a chance in the playoffs."
