A point closer to confirmation of League One survival for Latics

Wigan Athletic secured a hard-earned point on the road with a battling goalless draw against high-flying Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

The Latics put in a disciplined defensive display, limiting the hosts to just two shots on target, with goalkeeper Sam Tickle and his backline standing firm. While clear-cut chances were few and far between for Wigan, they’ll be pleased to have taken a point against the league’s second-placed side.

Shaun Maloney stuck with the same starting XI that earned a midweek draw at Crawley Town, while Luke Robinson returned to the matchday squad.

Wycombe came out strong, and within two minutes, a free-kick from the left led to Caleb Taylor directing a header towards goal, only for Tickle to produce a superb close-range save.

Moments later, Josh Scowen went close with a powerful volley from the left, clipping the top of the crossbar as Wigan had to weather early pressure from a Wycombe side unbeaten in their last 17 Saturday league games.

The Latics gradually grew into the game, even if they struggled to fashion clear openings. Joe Hungbo looked sharp down the right, while Owen Dale provided a threat on the left.

Early in the second half, Cameron Humphreys tested Will Norris with a low drive, which the Wycombe keeper kept out with his legs. Dale then forced Norris into action again with a deflected effort, as Wigan showed more urgency after the break.

As the game edged towards the final 15 minutes, Fred Onyedinma broke in behind the Latics’ defence, but Tickle was quick off his line to make another vital stop.

Wigan pushed for a late winner but were almost caught out on the counter, with Onyedinma racing forward before curling an effort just inches wide of the far post.

It was a well-earned point for Maloney’s men against one of the division’s strongest sides.
