Vadaine Oliver had given the hosts an early lead, but Bolton hit back through Eoin Toal before McAtee’s brilliant brace secured all three points. Luca Hoole’s late strike set up a tense finale, but the Trotters held on to claim a vital win.

Shrewsbury broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when John Marquis’ close-range effort rattled the crossbar, allowing Oliver to react quickest and slot home.

Bolton came close to an equaliser just before the break, with McAtee meeting Aaron Collins’ cross, but his header was pushed behind for a corner. Oliver nearly doubled Shrewsbury’s lead moments after half-time, only for his header to be cleared away.

The visitors eventually drew level just before the hour mark when Toal curled a stunning strike into the net. Moments later, Bolton turned the game on its head as McAtee powered a low drive into the bottom corner from inside the box.

McAtee doubled his tally in the 79th minute, firing home from close range after connecting with Szabolcs Schön’s cross.

Shrewsbury pulled one back late on when Hoole finished at the back post, but Bolton held firm to secure the win.

The result leaves Bolton just outside the play-off spots on goal difference, while third-bottom Shrewsbury remain four points adrift of safety.

Bolton fan reaction

Peter was in the away end and he was delighted with the win and the performance that went with it. He told us: That's 4 league wins out of the last 5 for Bolton against a much improved Shrewsbury team. We have a manager now who can stay calm, read a game and make the necessary changes to affect the game. Credit to the Shews who battled back and should survive under this manager. Pivotal game next week against Leyton  Orient. All to play for and should make for an exciting end of season for both clubs."

Phil gave a similar analysis of the match. He added: "What's great from our perspective is that we have now a Plan B. Previously, we would have probably lost a match like that. Onwards and upwards for the rest of the campaign."
