Football: Real Madrid 3 - 1 Manchester City
Real Madrid won 6-3 on aggregate
Manchester City's Champions League hopes fizzled out at the Bernabéu as Kylian Mbappé’s stunning hat-trick propelled holders Real Madrid into the last 16 with ease.

Pep Guardiola’s side arrived in Madrid needing to overturn a 3-2 deficit from the first leg, but their challenge was effectively over within four minutes. Mbappé capitalised on Raúl Asencio’s pass with a perfectly judged lob, stretching Real’s advantage before City had even settled.
City’s night quickly went from bad to worse. Erling Haaland was only fit enough for the bench, and moments after Mbappé’s opener, John Stones hobbled off injured. Any lingering hopes of a comeback faded before half-time when the French forward weaved past Joško Gvardiol with exquisite close control before slotting past Ederson.

Mbappé completed his hat-trick just after the hour mark with a low finish, sealing a dominant victory for Real as City toiled without ever truly laying a glove on their opponents. A late consolation arrived when Nico González turned in his first goal for the club after Omar Marmoush’s free-kick rattled the bar, but it did little to lift the gloom on a humbling night for the Premier League champions.
For Guardiola, the defeat was not just an early European exit – City’s earliest since failing to escape the group stage in 2012-13 – but a stark reality check. The Real Madrid fans revelled in his misfortune, a reminder of his Barcelona past, while City now face the daunting task of rebuilding to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite.

That negativity was shared by City fan Patrick who posted the following on his Facebook profile: "As soon as I saw the team sheet and knew Haaland wasn't playing, all my confidence for us getting the result that we needed drifted away. Ultimately, we just weren't good enough to compete in the Champions League next season. I just hope we can rectify this next year. We have to actually qualify first though."
