The 25-year-old forward, a £59 million signing from Eintracht Frankfurt last month, still has a long way to go before matching the real ‘Egyptian king’ over at Liverpool. But after four goalless games, he opened his City account in spectacular fashion.

His first goal came when Kieran Trippier misjudged a long ball from City goalkeeper Ederson, allowing Marmoush to pounce. Less than 14 minutes later, he sealed his treble with a clinical first-time finish from 10 yards. In between, he showed his composure by slotting home Ilkay Gundogan’s perfectly timed pass into the box.

It was the fourth-fastest Premier League hat-trick by a City player, with Sergio Aguero still holding the record for his nine-minute trio of goals in 2015.

Marmoush’s first-half heroics set the tone, and substitute James McAtee added a fourth in the 84th minute, flicking home after an assist from stand-in captain Erling Haaland.

Even without key defenders Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake, City looked back to their ruthless best – a timely confidence boost ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.

The only concern for Guardiola was Haaland picking up a knock late on, forcing him off with four minutes to play. The City boss will be hoping it’s nothing serious.

Champions League hopes boosted

City fans have waited to see their side click into this kind of fluid, attacking rhythm.

While Marmoush stole the headlines – and the match ball – fellow new signing Nico Gonzalez made a difference in midfield, while Brazilian winger Savinho was a constant menace further forward.

The 20-year-old, tipped by Guardiola as a key reason why Jack Grealish has struggled for a regular starting spot this season, wasted no time getting to work. From the opening whistle, he relentlessly drove at Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall, using his pace and agility to unpick the visitors’ defence.

His direct running and clever movement opened up space for the likes of Phil Foden and Gundogan to exploit. It was one of these slaloming runs and a cutback that set up Marmoush for his third goal, capping off a thrilling night for City.
