Tom Pugh won a spot-kick for the home side eight minutes from time but Waller guessed correctly to push away Hoti's kick.

The clearest chance before that crucial moment came in the fifth minute when Waller made an excellent one-on-one stop to deny Zak Emmerson.

Halifax midfielder Angelo Cappello drove forward from deep to unleash a shot which flew wide.

Rochdale did have their moments in the attacking third. They went close after 65 minutes when substitute Devante Rodney almost set up the lurking Leon Ayinde at the back post.

Seventh-placed Halifax are seven points better off Rochdale but have played four games more. If the Dale can win those games in hand they have every chance of ending the season in the playoff positions.

"As someone who goes to almost every game, I’ve seen us play better, but we’re still in the hunt for the play-offs. A few wins and we’re right back in it. Big games ahead—let’s hope the players find that extra little bit of quality when it matters."
