Salford's promotion hopes were dented away at Wimbledon

AFC Wimbledon climbed to second in League Two after a hard-fought victory over promotion rivals Salford, with Matty Stevens netting his 16th league goal of the season to settle the contest.

The hosts started brightly, with Marcus Browne stinging the palms of Salford goalkeeper Jamie Jones with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. Josh Neufville then tested Jones with a curling effort, and while the keeper did well to keep it out, he flapped at the resulting corner, punching the ball straight to Ryan Johnson—who could only head over the bar.

After the break, Wimbledon had strong appeals for a penalty turned down when Omar Bugiel appeared to be pulled down while trying to connect with a Jake Reeves cross.

However, the breakthrough came in the 65th minute. Stevens pounced on a defensive lapse, dispossessing a Salford defender before surging forward unchallenged and drilling a low shot into the bottom left corner.

Salford responded with a flurry of chances, as Owen Goodman produced a superb save to keep out Cole Stockton, while James Tilley rattled the woodwork in a frantic spell.

Despite the late pressure, Wimbledon held firm to secure a crucial three points, moving within five of league leaders Walsall ahead of the later fixtures.

Can Salford make the playoffs?

They are currently one point off 7th place with a game in hand on Crewe. Their aim of reaching play-offs is very much in their hands but they will have to show some more quality in the final third to get there.

All that being said, Salford's co-owners (which in case you have forgotten includes Gary Neville and Paul Scholes) will be delighted with their current league position. Promotion this season would be a historic achievement that was playing in the 8th tier of English football back in 2015.
