Harry Maguire expected to extend stay at Old Trafford
With so much instability at Old Trafford, is this a good decision?
Manchester United have confirmed they’ve activated a one-year extension to Harry Maguire’s contract.
The 31-year-old defender, who joined from Leicester City in 2019, was due to see his deal expire this summer. However, the extension means he’ll remain at Old Trafford until June 2026.
Maguire has so far made 222 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and winning two major trophies: the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. The centre-back remains determined to add more silverware to his collection in the years ahead.
Under ths manager Ruben Amorim, Harry Maguire has featured in seven games this season, showcasing his ability to thrive in a back-three formation – a system he’s familiar with from his time with England. His performances have been particularly impressive, notably in the 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad. Maguire has also stepped up as captain in Bruno Fernandes's absence.
Fan reaction
Liam, a Manchester United fan, added: "I think extending Harry Maguire’s contract is a sensible move. His experience, both at club level and with England, is invaluable, especially in those big-pressure games. He might not play every match, but having someone like him in the squad gives the team a bit of stability, particularly in defence. You need players with leadership qualities who can step in and deliver when called upon. Ultimately, if the manager wants to persist with the current formation, he is going to need a lot of options."
