Eddie Howe’s side were deserved winners, with early strikes from Alexander Isak and Joelinton sealing the points and lifting Newcastle to fifth in the table to cap off a strong finish to 2024. Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the final match of the calendar year.

The visitors took an early lead just four minutes in, with Alexander Isak heading home, and they maintained their momentum, doubling the advantage through Joelinton after 20 minutes.

Chances for United were hard to come by in a challenging first half. A disallowed second goal for Isak due to offside and Sandro Tonali striking the post from close range hinted that the damage could have been worse on another evening.

"What an absolute shambles of a game for us. The harsh truth is that the players we’ve got just aren’t up to the standard needed to keep United anywhere near the heights we’ve historically enjoyed. It’s time to face reality – for now, we’re a mid-to-lower table side.!

"We have to stick with Amorim, as painful as it might feel at the moment, but a massive squad overhaul is urgently needed. If we want to stand any chance of competing for trophies again, a complete rebuild is the only way forward."

The Manchester United and Atalanta have agreed a £72m deal for Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund. Manchester United will pay £64m plus £8m in add-ons for the 20-year-old.
