Football: Dan Ashworth leaves role at Manchester United
Here's some breaking news from the football world
Manchester United's sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has left the club after just five months in the role.
Sources close to the situation revealed that Ashworth was informed of the decision following United’s home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. He was seen walking through the press conference area alongside chief operating officer Collette Roche before heading to a meeting where his departure was confirmed.
Ashworth officially joined United on 1 July, following a five-month gardening leave period after leaving Newcastle.
It has been a challenging season for United. Erik ten Hag was sacked in October after a poor start, with just three wins in their opening nine Premier League games. The cost of parting ways with Ten Hag and his staff amounted to £10.4m while bringing in his replacement, Ruben Amorim, required an £11m release clause payment.

Further controversy arose when owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe scrapped discounted tickets for the small percentage of unsold seats at Premier League matches, introducing a minimum price of £66. This sparked protests at Old Trafford before last weekend's victory over Everton.
Ratcliffe has been vocal about the club’s struggles, describing United as "mediocre" and warning that more "difficult and unpopular decisions" will be necessary.
United’s financial struggles have also been laid bare. In their latest accounts, covering the period up to 30 June 2024, the club reported a net loss of £113.2m, bringing their total losses over the past five years to more than £370m.
Saturday’s loss to Forest leaves United 13th in the Premier League, with just five wins from 15 matches.
