The Tykes ended a 17-game winless streak against Wanderers, overturning a deficit with just 10 minutes left on the clock.
Klaidi Lolos gave Bolton the lead in the 26th minute, scoring his third goal of the season, and for much of the match, it looked like Barnsley’s barren run against their hosts would continue.
However, the visitors showed resilience despite a poor recent record of just one win in their previous eight matches across all competitions. They came close to levelling when former Bolton player Luca Connell hit the post early in the second half, while Jon Russell squandered two chances – firing over with only Nathan Baxter to beat and then being denied by the Bolton keeper.

Barnsley’s persistence finally paid off in the 80th minute. Phillips played a precise ball to Davis Keillor-Dunn, who slotted home his eighth goal of the season to bring the Tykes level.
Then, with just a minute of normal time remaining, Barnsley turned the game on its head. Corey O’Keeffe set up Phillips, who coolly fired home his seventh goal of the campaign, sealing a memorable win and exacting some revenge for last season’s play-off semi-final defeat to Bolton.
Curtis, a Bolton fan, told us what he thought went wrong for his side: "Poor team selection. Poor tactics. Poor Substitutions. We need a huge change to progress in the league and I'm not convinced that it's going to happen soon."
Daniel Attenborough added: "Another awful performance. We'll be lucky to reach the playoffs at the end of this season. Many fans were expecting us to be closer to automatic promotion and not fighting for scraps to get in 6th place."
